Understanding Crowns and Bridges: Restoring Your Smile at Universal Smiles Dental

At universal dental smiles we believe that everyone deserves a beautiful and healthy smile. Sometimes circumstances such as tooth decay, injury or other dental imperfections can affect the overall appearance of your teeth. This in turn can have a negative impact on a person’s self-confidence. If you’re facing these challenges, crowns and bridges are your go to solution. At our clinic, we provide high quality crown and bridge restorations for a perfect smile. Let’s have a look at the following blog post where we discuss crowns and bridges, their benefits and aftercare.

What Are Crowns and Bridges?

Crowns and bridges are the most common type of dental restorations that repair or enhance missing teeth. Although they serve different purposes, they share similarities in how they improve the function of your teeth. Crown is basically a cap that is placed over a damaged or broken tooth. This is done to restore its shape, size and appearance. This dental device is used for a variety of reasons such as:

  • Protecting a tooth after root canal
  • Strengthening a tooth with a large filling
  • Improving the look of a discolored tooth

Crowns can be made from porcelain or metal or both. This depends upon the location of the tooth and the patient’s requirements.

Dental bridge on the other hand is used to replace a missing or damaged tooth by anchoring itself to the adjacent healthy teeth known as abutment teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth fused between two crowns placed over the damaged tooth. This provides a stable solution to fill the gap left by a missing tooth. This dental device can also be made from different materials like gold, , metal or ceramic.

Benefits of crowns and bridges

One of the primary benefits of the above mentioned dental devices is to restore the functionality and health of your teeth. When dealing with the challenges of a damaged or missing tooth, crown and bridge allows you to chew, bite and speak. Not only the function, but the overall appearance of your smile is also enhanced. For people with broken or discolored teeth, crowns offer a natural looking alternative.

While dental bridges fill gaps left by a missing tooth, completing your smile.

Both restorative methods are designed to be long lasting providing durable dental restoration. In case you have a decaying tooth, the crown provides extra protection by encasing it. This helps preserve the tooth for years to come. Similarly bridges prevent the shifting of surrounding teeth when one of them is

missing. This helps maintain the alignment of your bite. Thus preventing complications down the road, such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues or difficulty chewing.

The process:-

There are a series of steps involved in crowns and bridge work. The team at Universal Smiles Dental does everything it can to ensure the process is comfortable and efficient. Our first step is a consultation. At this appointment, we look at your teeth and determine which the best dental restoration method is for you. X-ray is taken to inspect the underlying condition. If you’re having a crown, the next step is to prepare the tooth. It often entails removing any damaged or decayed parts and to reshape the tooth to open up space into which the crown fits. To prepare for a dental bridge, however, the adjacent teeth are reshaped. This is done by cutting away part of the tooth to ensure there’s healing margins left for crowns to engage with.

Once the preparation has been done, an impression of your teeth is taken. The impression is sent to a dental lab. At the lab, your new custom crown or bridge will be made to exactly match the shape and color of your natural teeth. While the permanent restoration is being made, you will be fitted with a temporary restoration. This is done to protect the prepared teeth, since they become sensitive.

In a couple of weeks your permanent dental restoration will be ready. You’ll get a fitting appointment at Universal Smiles Dental. The temporary restoration will be removed and the permanent one is placed. The dentist will do minor adjustments for a perfect fit. Once complete, the restoration will then be securely cemented onto your teeth. Following placement of the crown or bridge, your dentist may schedule another visit. The purpose of this visit is to be sure that your restoration is functioning properly without problems.

Aftercare

Once the procedure has been successfully carried out, the next most essential step is the aftercare. This is what decides how long your dental restoration will last. Some of the most important tips to keep in mind are as follows:

  1. Maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing your teeth at least twice a day. Also make sure to floss regularly to remove plaque and tartar buildup.
  2. Avoid consuming hard food items like ice and candies. Also don’t try opening packages using your teeth.
  3. Get regular checkups.
  4. If any signs of problems such as pain, or biting issues arise, consult Universal smiles dental promptly. Early detection will prevent extensive damage.
  5. We do recommend use of a night guard to prevent any damage from grinding your teeth in sleep.

Frequently asked questions

1.  Will the restoration process cause any pain?

No, the restoration process does not cause any pain itself. However while preparing the teeth you might feel slight discomfort.

2.  Can I get whitening treatment done with these dental devices?

Crowns and bridges cannot get whitening treatments done like natural teeth. If you intend to remove any discoloration or enhance the color of your teeth, it is better to get the whitening treatment done before the restoration process.

3.  How long do dental restorations last?

Restorations are designed to last many years with proper care. Typically they can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years depending upon the material used and the location they are placed in.
