Dental Crowns and Bridges
When you live with a tooth that is severely broken, damaged, missing or decayed, it can take a toll on your daily life, including chewing comfortably, enjoying food, talking and interacting with other people. Some people may even feel self-conscious about the appearance of your smile.
At Universal Smiles Dental, we offer reliable solutions for restoring missing or damaged teeth with a dental crown or bridge.
When Do We Recommend a Tooth Crown?
Dental crowns are ideal for supporting a tooth in these situations:
- Severely decayed or damaged
- Broken or fractured
- For aesthetics: To cover an oddly shaped, discoloured or broken tooth
- To strengthen a tooth that’s had root canal treatment
- Replace a worn, lost or damaged large filling
- To top a dental implant as a single tooth replacement
A crown covers a tooth entirely to the gumline, so it’s ideal for preserving your remaining natural tooth structure, protecting your root, and also providing the function you need and the aesthetics you want.
When Do We Recommend a Dental Bridge?
Bridges can be an excellent option for patients who are not candidates for or don’t want implant surgery to replace their teeth.
A bridge can support one or multiple adjacent missing teeth. It uses dental crowns that anchor to healthy teeth and hold one or more prosthetic teeth in between that fill in the gaps. A bridge is a fixed appliance, so you don’t have to worry about taking it out at night for cleaning like you would a denture
Getting a Dental Crown or Bridge at Universal Smiles Dental
Restoring your smile with a tooth crown or dental bridge is relatively the same and requires two appointments with your Mernda dentist.
At your first visit, Dr Malik prepares your tooth or teeth for the new crown or bridge and takes impressions to send to a trusted dental lab. He will also create a temporary version of your restoration for you to wear while you wait for the dental lab to make your final version.
It typically takes two to three weeks for the dental lab to finish your new crown or bridge, and when it’s ready, you’ll return to Universal Smiles Dental to have it placed. Dr Malik permanently cements your new restoration and makes any needed adjustments to ensure that you have full chewing function, and then you’ll be off to smile, talk, eat and chew with confidence again!
