Tooth Extraction Doesn't Have to Be Stressful!
Tooth Extraction
It is always our goal to help you protect and maintain your natural teeth for as long as possible. However, there are some circumstances when tooth extraction becomes necessary to protect your dental health and overall well-being.
In these situations, Dr Malik and his team help our patients by providing comfortable and stress-free tooth extractions in Mernda, VIC.
When Do We Recommend Tooth Extraction?
Dr Malik may recommend removing a tooth in these situations:
- Wisdom teeth
- A tooth that is infected beyond what a root canal can restore
- For severe tooth decay or fracture
- Advanced gum disease (periodontitis) that’s destroyed a tooth’s support system
- Preparing for dentures or orthodontic treatment
Do I Need My Wisdom Teeth Removed?
For most patients, the answer is yes, and here’s why.
Overcrowding
Most people don’t have enough space in their mouths for third molars (wisdom teeth), and they can cause crowding and even dismantle previous orthodontic treatments.
Cleanliness
Wisdom teeth arrive behind your second molars, which puts them farthest back in your mouth. Many people have trouble reaching them for proper brushing and flossing. When you can’t successfully keep your third molars clean, it puts you at a higher risk for developing tooth decay, gum disease and cavities.
Impaction
Some wisdom teeth remain stuck below the gumline or impacted. Teeth that are impacted can cause discomfort and infection in some cases, so it’s essential to remove them before they become problematic.
Dental Health
Some third molars arrive at odd angles that can be harmful or damaging to neighbouring teeth. It’s best to remove them to protect your healthy smile.
When Do I Need a Tooth Replaced?
If your tooth extraction is not a wisdom tooth, Dr Malik may talk with you about tooth replacement.
The reason it’s crucial to think about replacing a lost tooth is that it can significantly impact your dental health if you don’t restore it.
A lost tooth means a missing root, which leaves your jawbone with nothing left to keep it stimulated and healthy. Without replacement, it begins to deteriorate, impacting support for surrounding teeth.
Above the gumline, your remaining teeth may begin to move and shift into the open space without tooth replacement. This results in bite misalignment, leading to painful jaw joint (TMJ) issues.
Replacing a tooth restores health, function and aesthetics to your smile.
