Reclaim Your Rest with Solutions for Sleep Apnoea!

Sleep Apnoea

Does your bed partner ever accuse you of waking them up with loud snoring? Do you suffer from frequent headaches, especially in the morning? Do you ever feel exhausted by the afternoon, even after a full night’s sleep?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be suffering from sleep apnoea. At Universal Smiles Dental, Dr Malik offers a solution for patients with sleep apnoea, and we can help you get the revitalising rest you need.

What Is Sleep Apnoea?

Sleep apnoea is a serious sleep disorder that causes its victims to wake multiple times throughout the night, often without their realisation.

Obstructive sleep apnoea is the most common form of this disorder, and it’s caused by a blocked or obstructed airway that cuts off oxygen flow. The lack of oxygen signals your brain to wake you up, and the cycle starts again.

What Are the Signs of Sleep Apnoea?

Patients suffering from sleep apnoea may notice one or more of these signs and symptoms:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Brain fog or grogginess
  • Frequent headaches, especially in the morning
  • Depression, mood swings or irritability
  • Loud snoring
  • Waking up gasping or coughing
  • Dry mouth or throat

Your bed partner may report loud snoring that keeps them awake. They may also notice that you stop breathing during the night or wake up gasping. Patients suffering from sleep apnoea often don’t realise these things are happening or that they’re waking up throughout the night. They may be waking multiple, if not hundreds of times throughout the night without knowing.

What Are the Dangers of Sleep Apnoea?

Some of the problematic health concerns associated with sleep apnoea are:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Cardiovascular problems, including heart failure
  • Depression
  • Weight gain
  • Stroke

Sleep apnoea not only impacts your health but also your ability to participate in and complete your normal daily activities since you may suffer from brain fog or chronic fatigue that makes it difficult to focus and concentrate during the day.

Your sleep condition may also be keeping your bed partner from getting the restful sleep that they need and deserve.

How We Help with Sleep Apnoea

Dr Malik has helped hundreds of patients reclaim their rest with customised oral appliances that are often more comfortable for patients to wear than a continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) appliance.

CPAP is the standard treatment for patients with sleep apnoea, but it requires them to wear a mask that delivers air continuously while they sleep, keeping the airway open and clear. Many patients find the mask difficult and uncomfortable to wear.

The oral appliance may be an excellent solution for patients with mild to moderate sleep apnoea.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

At Universal Smiles Dental, Dr Malik offers solutions for sleep apnoea with custom oral appliances that are comfortable and easy to wear so they don’t interrupt your sleep.

What Is Sleep Apnoea?

Obstructive sleep apnoea is the most common type. It is a dangerous sleep disorder that actually causes you to wake multiple times throughout the night, sometimes without your realization, due to an obstructed airway.

When your airway is blocked and cuts off breathing, the lack of oxygen triggers your brain to wake you up. This can happen hundreds of times throughout the night for patients who suffer from severe sleep apnoea, resulting in a lack of the restful and rejuvenating sleep you need.

The standard of care for sleep apnoea is continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) therapy, which requires patients to wear a mask that delivers continuous air pressure to keep the airways open for clear breathing. Many patients find the CPAP more difficult to wear than an oral appliance.

For mild or moderate cases of sleep apnoea, the oral appliance may take the place of CPAP therapy. Patients with severe sleep apnoea may be able to combine both treatments to achieve clear breathing and a restful night’s sleep.
